The Career

Contribution to Film Industry

Imrat Khan has played for a number of films, although always taking care to remain strictly within the boundaries of his classical heritage. He has played the sitar and surbahar for Satyajit Ray's masterpiece, The Music Room. In 1968 he composed and played for James Ivory's The Guru, also assisting with the technical and musical direction of the film. In 1976 he played the surbahar on the soundtrack of Kadambari, an Indian film starring Shabana Asmi. More recently he has composed for and played the sitar and surbahar in The Wilby Conspiracy, starring Michael Caine and Sydney Poitier. He has also composed and played, with his sons, for the TV feature film Majdhar, produced in the U.K.
